One thing is clear after this game, the Patriots defense isn’t very sexy to watch. Check that, the Patriots SECONDARY isn’t very sexy to watch. They’re almost equivalent to the cold shower and baseball mantra as they let Big Ben Roethlisberger throw for 365 yards and 2 TD. On the Steelers opening drive alone, Ben connected with tight end Heath Miller five times, thus setting the tone for a Big Ben rape fest on the Pats secondary for the day.
And rape fest it was. The Steelers offense was on the field for almost 40 minutes yesterday, limiting Brady and co. to only 20 minutes of work. It was bad, because no body watches the Patriots for their defense. They watch to see Tom Brady rake, not a Devin McCourty tackle twenty yards down field. But regardless, the Pats have to put this miserable game behind them. But I won’t. Here are a few things that stood out:
1) The Gronkowski catch in the fourth quarter with 5 minutes left should have been challenged. The game would have been completely different if the Pats were back on defense with a minute or two in their favor. Actually, come to think of it, it probably wouldn’t have.
2) The onside kick attempt that the Patriots “performed” in the fourth quarter was hysterical. Almost as hysterical as the stat that scrolled across the bottom of the screen afterwords that read: “The Patriots haven’t recovered an onside kick since 1994”. Ridiculous.
3) Troy Polamalu nearly tore Wes Welkers head off on the Patriots last touchdown drive. As holy of a man Polamalu is, he plays like every opponent just kicked sand in his kid’s face. Should have been a penalty, but I guess I’m just splitting hairs here.
4) The McRib is back. So we got that going for us….
