What’s next for David Ortiz? The Yankees?

ESPN Boston – Does David Ortiz saying he isn’t sure he wants to be part of the Sox “drama” and wouldn’t rule out the Yankees rub you the wrong way?

David Ortiz had a great year with the Red Sox in 2011, but it looks like he is on the way out. I know most fans hate that quote ESPN got off of Ortiz in a recent interview, but if he leaves it will only benefit the team. Furthermore, the Yankees don’t want this overpaid fat slob to be their DH. New York has plenty of DH candidates already on their team: A-Rod, Jeter, Monetero, etc. So even though Ortiz may want to go to the Yankees, this isn’t 2007 and 80% of the teams don’t want him. His stock is so low right now he looks like the American stock market. Ortiz must play in the AL because he can’t play the field, so there goes those teams. Then in the AL most of the teams wont overpay for an aging DH, and then the rest of the teams don’t want to deal with the headache that is Big Papi. Maybe teams like the Angels, Blue Jays, or Tigers will be willing to pay him to be a “mascot” and DH, but other than using him to get fans to games Ortiz is a waste. Without Ortiz the Red Sox will be able to have a dynamic squad.Use Kevin Youkalis as your primary DH and back up corner infielder. Look into options at thrid, or stick with Jed Lowrie in that spot. The open spots left would be Right Field and Shortstop, which both have some great prospects waiting to fill in (Jose Iglesias, Ryan Kalish, Josh Reddick, etc.). If new GM Ben Cherington knows what’s good for him he will let Ortiz walk and tell him that he should focus on making hot sauce.
